Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the filtered water taste different?

The elements present in water give it a distinct taste. Before filtration, along with taste, tap water may also have some odour. During the filtration process elements like Chlorine, Fluoride and heavy metals like Lead, etc., are removed, and hence the distinct taste formed due to these elements is neutralised.

In case there is a plastic-like smell in the water, how can I get rid of it?

The water purifier is composed of a plastic pre-filter and activated carbon. These things do not produce any plastic smells. Sometimes, the packaging shell and plastic body may emit a plastic-like smell that gets removed automatically after a short while.

If you still feel a plastic-like smell in the water, it is not wise to drink it immediately. Here are some solutions to get rid of that plastic-type smell:

  • Don't rush to drink water from your newly purchased dispenser
  • Fill the tank with cold water, allow it to stay for a while, and rinse the water outlet
  • Boil the water at a high temperature, then let it cool down; this allows further cleaning of the spout
  • If you feel that the smell persists, it is recommended to pour vinegar in it and allow it to soak for half an hour, and you can even soak it for a longer duration if you are worried about the smell
  • The vinegar should be released after soaking, and then bottled water should be used to wash it, as stated above, until no vinegar smell is left.

Does Aimex water filter affect the smell and taste of water?

In our water filters, along with filtration, remineralisation also takes place in which essential trace minerals are added back, balancing the pH of the water to slightly alkaline, which is better for the body. This gives filtered water the distinct taste.

What is the pH of the filtered water?

The pH of water using Aimex water filters comes to around 7-8 or even slightly higher, making it slightly alkaline.

Why don't some people prefer the taste of filtered water?

While most people love the way their water tastes on filtration, please note that taste is an individual preference and may vary based on personal choice. We give you the reassurance that water filtered with Aimex water filters is pure and healthy, and the taste is what majority buyers consider as 'tasty'. But please be advised that as filtration is a defined process, there is nothing we can do externally to change the taste if you prefer it otherwise.

It may happen that when you first switch to drinking filtered water, you may feel the difference, and it takes some time to adapt to the new taste. Knowing that it is right for your health makes it easier.

Can we return the water filter once opened?

We are sorry, but due to hygiene reasons, we do not stock it back and resell and hence cannot accept the return

What if there I feel there is a fault in my water filter?

All our products go through stringent quality checks before being shipped. If you find any fault, please reach out to us through this google form; https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSehJ1sYtVEyzbuRSDWgzumJ9q9r0L_27uGvOnkrUf-Dwc8KEw/viewform, and we will resolve it for you. All return shipment is paid the customer (in case of a post/courier fault, the seller has to pay for return shipment).

How do I install a new/replacement filter?

For the best experience with Aimex water filters, soak filters and pads in water overnight. Soaking will also remove any air inside. Next day, wash it under warm (not hot) running tap water - this will get rid of the black residue releasing from activated charcoal. Your filter is now ready to be installed.

Do I need to see a doctor if I drink dark coloured water?

The black residue is a natural discharge from activated charcoal, which is an essential component of filtration. If you have correctly followed the pre-installation steps - soaked and washed your water filter - then it should not leak and give only clear water. In case you drink water when it is still dark - there is no cause for concern. Activated charcoal is a natural detoxifier and is being used in many products now.

We emphasise the thorough washing of your filter before installation.

Why is it taking very long for filtration?

In the event of extremely slow filtration, please rinse the water filter with warm water (not hot or boiling). The only reason this may occur is if air molecules are trapped in the ceramic layer as it has very minute, 5-micron pores. Smaller pore size is one of the measures of a high-quality water filter.

Once you wash thoroughly and start using the water filter, the filtration rate will gradually increase.

(Aimex water filters are 180 mm high x 84 mm wide.)

What to do if my water filter leaks from the side?

In a new filter, the leak may be due to the air stuck between the particles of the water filter. To fix this, you can remove the water filter and wash it under running warm water (not hot or boiling) for 10-15 min. If you can visibly see the air bubbles, slight tapping may also help to remove them. Washing will help in removing any air left within and improves the flow. The flow will also increase gradually with use.

How often do I need to change the water filter (e.g. 8 stage/7 stage/ 8 stage Fluoride filter/ 8 stage white filter)?

For best filtration results, we recommend changing the water filter every 6 months or 5000 litres water usage, whichever comes first. You can buy a new filter any time from our online store here.

How does charcoal purify water?

Charcoal purifies water primarily through adsorption , a process where contaminants chemically bind to the massive porous surface area of activated carbon . As water passes through, the charcoal acts like a sponge, trapping impurities like chlorine, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and pesticides while letting beneficial minerals pass through.

Key Aspects of Charcoal Filtration:
  • Adsorption vs. Absorption: Unlike absorption (soaking up), adsorption occurs when contaminants stick to the surface of the carbon.
  • Activated Surface: Charcoal is "activated" by high heat and chemicals, creating millions of tiny pores that provide an immense surface area for capturing contaminants.
  • Contaminants Removed: Effective at removing chlorine, sediment, volatile organic compounds, and odours, significantly improving taste.
  • Limitations: Charcoal does not effectively remove all contaminants, such as some dissolved minerals, salts, nitrates, and fluoride. It is also less effective at removing heavy metals like lead and arsenic, and cannot kill bacteria.
  • Maintenance: Filters must be replaced, as they become saturated with contaminants and can, if unused for a long time, allow bacteria to grow.

Does charcoal dissolve in water?

No, charcoal (including activated charcoal) isn't soluble in water. It’s a solid, carbon-based substance that won't dissolve; instead, it works as an absorbent by trapping contaminants on its surface. When you mix it with water, it creates a suspension or a slurry, or simply settles at the bottom as a solid residue rather than forming a proper solution.

Key details about charcoal and water:

  • Insolubility: Charcoal is completely insoluble in water and other solvents, meaning it stays solid.

  • Filtration and Adsorption: Because it doesn't dissolve, activated charcoal is regularly used in filters to trap impurities through adsorption.

  • Slurry: In medical situations, activated charcoal is mixed into water to make a suspension (a slurry) for treatment, but the particles are just floating around rather than dissolving.

  • The Art Exception: Liquid charcoal used for drawing is a bit different. It’s a water-soluble pigment that behaves like paint, and it actually stays water-soluble even after it dries so artists can go back and rework it.

Why it doesn't dissolve:

Charcoal consists of carbon atoms arranged in porous structures that are highly hydrophobic (water-repelling), which stops it from dissolving in water.

Can I get professional advice on selecting a water filtration system in my area?

Choosing a Water Filter in Your Area: Quick Expert Guide

Water quality across Australia varies significantly. Whether you are dealing with chlorine-treated town mains in metro areas, or heavy minerals and sediment in regional bore and tank water, choosing the right system is key.

1. Match Your Water Source

  • Town Mains: Safe, but often contaminated with a harsh chlorine taste, chemical odours, and rust from old pipes.

  • Bore & Rainwater: Often requires heavy-duty filtration layers to target heavy metals, bacteria, or harsh mineral hardness.

2. Choose Your Setup

  • Whole-House Systems: Filter every tap and appliance in the home. They require professional plumbing installation and higher maintenance.

  • Bench top & Gravity Purifiers: The smartest choice for drinking and cooking. They require zero plumbing or electricity, making them highly cost-effective and perfect for both homeowners and renters.

3. Look for Remineralisation

Standard filters strip everything out, leaving water tasting flat and acidic. Look for a multi-stage system—like Aimex Australia’s 8-Stage Filtration—which removes impurities (chlorine, heavy metals, fluoride) but uses natural Maifan stones to add back essential minerals. This raises the pH to a smooth, mildly alkaline finish that tastes like natural spring water.

What is Off-Grid & Rural Water Filtration: The Ultimate Solution ?

If you live in a remote or rural area, you are likely relying on rainwater tanks, bore water, or river supply. These sources come with unique challenges like sediment, bacteria, heavy metals, and wild bird droppings.

For reliable, off-grid purification without electricity or plumbing, professionals recommend a heavy-duty gravity setup.

Why the Phoenix Gravity System Wins Off-Grid:

  • Zero Power Required: Operates purely on gravity. Whether the mains power goes down or you live completely off-the-grid, you always have access to safe drinking water.

  • Built for Tough Water: Paired with advanced purification candles, it filters out bacteria, cysts, suspended solids, and heavy metals commonly found in rural tanks and bores.

  • Durable Stainless Steel: Unlike plastic setups that degrade in harsh regional conditions, high-grade stainless steel is food-safe, incredibly durable, and easy to clean.

What are the top-rated water filtration products available for purchase online?

When searching for the best water filtration products online, the right choice depends entirely on your living situation, budget, and water source. The top-rated systems on the market generally fall into three major categories: Under-Sink, Benchtop Mineral Purifiers, and Heavy-Duty Gravity Systems.

If you are looking for premium quality without the massive middleman markup, here is how the top-rated setups compare—and what makes the Australian-designed range from Aimex Australia stand out.

The Heavy-Duty Champion: Stainless Steel Gravity Filters

For off-grid living, rural properties, or anyone wanting maximum durability, high-grade stainless steel gravity systems are consistently rated as the ultimate solution. Because they require zero plumbing or electricity, they are completely reliable in any environment.

  • The Aimex Solution: Our premium The Steel Collection features the rugged Phoenix Gravity Water Filter System (available in 6L, 8L, and large 12L capacities). Built from food-safe 304 stainless steel, it uses advanced carbon and optional specialized fluoride-reduction cartridges to eliminate up to 95% of fluoride, chlorine, PFAS, and heavy metals. It’s elegant, virtually indestructible, and perfect for both home kitchens and remote settings.

The Everyday Favorite: Benchtop Mineral Purifiers

If your main goal is elite-quality drinking water for a family home or rental, standalone bench top purifiers are a top online choice. They sit comfortably on your counter and offer multi-stage filtration that outperforms basic supermarket filter jugs.

  • The Aimex Solution: Our flagship 16L and 20L Bench top Water Purifiers feature an industry-leading 8-Stage Filtration process. Instead of just stripping your water bare (which leaves it tasting flat and acidic), our system filters out impurities and then uses natural Maifan stones to reintroduce essential minerals. This raises the water to a smooth, mildly alkaline pH that tastes exactly like fresh mountain spring water.

The Concealed Option: Under-Sink Systems

For those who want filtered water straight from the tap without taking up counter space, under-sink plumbing systems (like multi-stage Reverse Osmosis units) are highly popular online. While they offer excellent purification, they do require dedicated under-bench space and occasional professional plumbing maintenance.

Do refrigerator water filters remove fluoride?

Standard refrigerator water filters typically do not remove fluoride. To effectively remove fluoride from your drinking water in Australia, you need a specialised filtration system, such as an Aimex Reverse Osmosis system or our specialised alkaline water filter stones.

What is the best water filter for nanoplastics and microplastics?

The best water filter for removing nanoplastics and microplastics is one equipped with an Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane or a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system. Aimex Australia’s multi-stage filtration systems and Phoenix Gravity Water filter are specifically designed to trap Microparticles down to 0.1 microns, ensuring your drinking water is clear of plastic contaminants.
